Peaky Blinders and the North West: From Season 6 filming to Stephen Graham’s Brummy bow

Peaky Blinders season 6 is set to begin on Sunday, and as Thomas Shelby enters his final chapter, we look back through the Birmingham-based programme’s links with Merseyside and Manchester.

Stephen Graham

Merseyside-born actor Stephen Graham is set to make his Peaky Blinders debut on Sunday, and the 48-year-old is eager to add the programme to his already impressive portfolio.

Graham has seen his stock rise substantially over the last few years, having starred in feature films such as the Elton John biopic Rocketman, and the globally acclaimed tv series Line of Duty.

And fans of the former Snatch actor will be eager to see where he fits within an already star-studded cast featuring Cillian Murphy, Anya-Taylor Joy and Tom Hardy.

Liverpool

It has long been documented that much of the series is filmed in Liverpool, with the cobbled streets and the canal perfectly suiting the aesthetic of Birmingham in the late-1800s.

The filming of season six drew crowds within the city and fans scrambled to get a glimpse of their idols.

Manchester

Like Liverpool, Manchester’s architecture accentuates its appeal as a filming location for the industrial backdrop from which the Shelby family commence their work.

BBC cameras were present at Castlefield Bowl in the scorching heat of Summer 2021 to film scenes for season six.

Despite the humidity, Cillian Murphy looked as calm and collected as ever, arriving on set to bring to life Thomas Shelby for what would be one of the last times.

As anticipation for the new season ramps up, fans from the North West will also be looking out for familiar locations when they sit down to watch the Shelby family in their final outing.
