Salford campaigner calls for night trams to improve safety in Greater Manchester

By Olivia Snelson

A Salford local election candidate is calling for trams to run through to the early hours of the morning in a bid to improve safety.

Alex Warren, Liberal Democrat candidate for Salford Quays, is campaigning for later trams to stop residents needing to choose between a pricey taxi or a risky walk home in the dark.

Currently, the last Metrolink tram from the city centre to Salford Quays is at 23:39, but some argue this is not late enough.

Mr Warren said: “we really rely on this tram network, it features heavily in our way of life and we are being handed an ever depreciating service.”

He is calling on Salford Council and Greater Manchester Combined Authority to provide a service that better suits workers and residents by running trams until 4am on weekends and 2am weekdays.

Alex Warren is standing in the upcoming local elections alongside Labour’s Phil Tresadern and Green Party’s Lucy Staniforth.
